About Us
In the years before World War II, most of the swamp areas around Perth contained Chinese market gardens producing much of the vegetables used by the surrounding community.
Now known as Dorian Gardens, this was such a vegetable garden. Cultivated by hard working Chinese watering their vegetables with two, five-gallon watering cans, carried on a yoke across their shoulders.
The water was obtained from a dip well, this being a shallow well where the water gathered.
I was studying wool classing and management at a nearby technical college living in Cowle Street.
The street overlooked one of these market gardens, so when I decided to grow flower seedlings to create an income it seemed natural to emulate the Chinese with their cans and dip well.
To be truthful I had very little choice but to start a garden myself as money was in short supply.
Needing more land to increase the production of seedlings I purchased five acres of land at Dog Swamp, and having some land spare, decided to produce a plant that has been close to my heart for as long as I can remember. Roses.
The team I had behind me produced quality roses at Dog Swamp for a number of years during which time Cliff, my second son, who was also fascinated by this beautiful plant, left school and joined me at the nursery.
Upon shifting to the Landsdale block to produce more roses, Cliff with his knowledge of modern roses was able to lead the way.
It gives me a great sense of satisfaction and pleasure to see this beautiful plant grown by my son, grandchildren and staff of experts.
